Submissions

We read year-round. Send in any of your previously unpublished work and you’ll get a decision within four weeks.

What are we looking for?

Feed the hairy word-monster. We want art that reeks of art.

Fiction, photography, short stories, long stories, paintings, articles, interviews, arguments, letters, texts… you name it, we probably want it.

Just because we haven’t published a particular style before, doesn’t mean it’s not on our radar.

Guidelines

1. NO VERSE POETRY. Please don’t send us your poetry. We accept everything else. Art submissions should be black-and-white and submitted as a PNG file.

2. Tell us about simultaneous submissions.

3. One piece at a time. 2,500 words maximum. For artwork, you can send as many pieces as you’d like.

4. .doc or .docx files only. No PDFs.

5. Name the subject line of your email using the format ‘LAST NAME – TITLE OF WORK – FAVOURITE FRUIT’. For example: AUSTEN – MANSFIELD PARK – POMEGRANATE. We will not be considering submissions that don’t adhere to this format.

6. Include a third-person bio. Your publication history or lack thereof will neither impress nor disappoint us. We just want you to tell us a bit about yourself.

7. Email submissions to figwortlit [at] gmail [dot] com.

Other Information

1. We are not currently a paying market.

2. Submissions are, and always will be, free.

3. We pledge to respond to all submissions within thirty days. If we still haven’t got back to you after a month, give us a nudge.

4. We offer expedited submissions should you buy us a coffee. All donations are reinvested into the journal. We’ll get back to you in under 72 hours.

5. Resubmissions are welcome. We do not banish artists from our journal.

Rights

Your work remains your intellectual property. If we accept your work, we ask for First Serial Rights as well as nonexclusive rights to archive your piece on our site indefinitely. We may ask for minor editorial changes to your work, in collaboration with you, before publication. Upon publication, all rights revert to you. If your work is republished elsewhere, congratulations (again!). Just remember to cite us as the original publisher.
